They crossed the finish line in Table Bay at 1638 local time (1438 GMT), accompanied by a pod of dolphins surfing down the face of the waves. Earlier in the day the cloud had lifted to reveal the iconic shape of Table Mountain which dominates the Cape Town skyline but it was in brooding conditions that the team crossed the line with Capetonian crew member, Marlon Jones, 20, at the helm.

Marlon, who started sailing five years ago at Cape Town’s Izivunguvungu Sailing Academy, joined the crew of Cork in Rio de Janeiro for the 3,300-mile race across the Atlantic back to his home city and his family was at Royal Cape Yacht Club to welcome him.

Beaming proudly Marlon said, “Helming over the finish line was great! I wanted to give the wheel to the skipper but he said no, I must keep it – it made me feel so proud. The whole thing was great fun – they made me feel really welcome and part of the crew.”

The Irish team, led by skipper Richie Fearon, has led the race for the last six days, working themselves into an unassailable position to claim their first win of the 35,000-mile challenge of a lifetime.

Stepping off Cork onto the pontoon at Royal Cape Yacht Club an ecstatic Richie said, “That was absolutely brilliant – it’s great to arrive here first. It was hard out there; big seas and big winds and we pushed the boat good and hard. As a crew we came well together and I’d say we deserve it. We kept the boat going ahead of the others and I’m really chuffed.”

News of Cork’s victory has already reached the Irish Ambassador to South Africa. His Excellency, Colin Wrafter, said, "This is fantastic, the crew have done marvellously well. There deserve a few good days in lovely Cape Town. I am so proud of them. Up Cork!"

The crew were entertained by a traditional Cape Town minstrel group, the Ghoema Entertainers. The colourful troupe are regulars in Cape Town’s unique annual minstrel competition and have also played at the opening ceremonies of the cricket and rugby union World Cups.

Competition among the fleet is fierce and a battle royal is being waged between Team Finland and Uniquely Singapore for second and third place. Both teams are expected to arrive at Royal Cape Yacht Club this evening.

The rest of the ten strong fleet, including Jamaica Lightning Bolt, Hull & Humber, Qingdao, Spirit of Australia, Edinburgh Inspiring Capital, Cape Breton Island and California are due to finish in the next few days and are all expected in Cape Town by Sunday afternoon.

Cork Leads!

1129 miles to go and Cork is in pole position having covered 125 miles in the last 12 hours!
Follow at:www.clipperroundtheworld.com/index.php/Follow/RaceViewer

Ships log update

Thanks to John Lawrence for bringing attention to:
www.atanchor.com
This website details the travels of the good ship CALUSA, crewed by several members of the club !!

Dinner Dance

A reminder that the LSYC Dinner Dance takes place on friday 20th November at An Grinan Hotel, Commodores Reception at 730pm. From small and stormy beginnings on Sunday, numbers grew steadily, with a fleet of 7 boats on Friday evening. The unsettled weather offered a variety of conditions for young sailors and there was plenty of practice at capsizing. There was one particularly electrifying moment when lightning struck the Creek on Tuesday evening. Fortunately racing had been abandoned and all sailors were ashore at the time. The week finished on Friday evening with a bit of craic, a barbeque and prize giving in the Clubhouse. Many thanks to all who took part and to all those who helped out during the week. I look forward to the regrowth of dinghy sailing in the Club and hope to have the week afloat as an annual event.
Results-

Series winners Winds remained fairly constant until the fleet reached Swillymore when conditions were flukey and some Yachts getting caught up in fishing lines. Chilli Paddi with only 2 on board were a victim and one crew member had to deploy diving gear to free a line caught under the keel. The winds turned light towards the end with a number of boats retiring. Faustina drifted yards from the finishing line for 47 minutes before finally crossing it. Chilli paddi persevered to win Class 1 with the elated team on Magic Spell taking honours in Class 2.
Festivities on the Island were some what toned down as a sign of respect for the passing of an Islander. It was encouraging to see a new generation of young sailors taking the helms of their own vessels as well as members new to the club taking part. Winds were light and flukey, making for some tactical sailing in the first race. Not all persisted in the taxing conditions but the winners were - 1st Weeble, Laser II (Caoimhe McKenna & Robert Nicholls), 2nd Stephen Doherty in a Topaz Uno, 3rd Jack Hutton in a Topper. The 2nd race was abandoned by popular consent in favour of capsize drills. It is good to see that the young generation take safety seriously. All in all it was a good start to the season and I look forward to the continued growth of dinghy sailing at the club.
